Better Times Ahead

As we begin another week of the stay at home order many people are having a very difficult time. They have a feeling of depression, hopelessness, and a lack of a certain future.

They are inundated with visual images in the media and a constant deluge of commercials chiming “We are all in this together.”

Truth is, although we are going through the same experience, we all cope differently. We’re in the same ocean, but not in the same boat. Unemployment, school closings, not being able to graduate or attend prom and a myriad of other individual circumstances has made life a nightmare for many. Suicide, domestic violence, depression and anxiety are increasing.

Several of my friends were disappointed with the Bishops in Ohio extended not having public Masses until May 29th, at Pentecost.

Isn’t it time we changed the narrative? Isn’t it time to quit counting the hospitalization and deaths and start to celebrate life, especially those that have beaten the virus?

Isn’t it time to think about the better times ahead?

When this is all over, we are going to get together again. We will be going to Sunday Mass and receiving the Blessed Sacrament. And maybe, just maybe, we will receive with a renewed understanding of what we are receiving, the Body, Blood, soul and Divinity of Jesus.

We will grill some steaks and share a beer with family and friends and it will mean more than it used to. We will share stories of our time in quarantine and have a laugh over an experience we will never forget, ever!

We will watch amazing concerts, enjoy the crack of the bat as we cheer our favorite baseball team and stuff our faces with hot dogs and nachos.

We will ride the rides at our favorite amusement park and swim and splash at our favorite pool. We’ll walk our dog at our favorite park and will enjoy the trees and flowers with a renewed sense of beauty.

We’ll play some golf and cheer for our favorite players and football teams.

Yes, there are better times ahead. Let’s spend some time thinking about this. This epidemic will end, and when it does, we will be better people, stronger, more spiritual and willing to help each other, and united.

It will be a while longer, but until then; be safe, stay at home when you can, practice social distancing and concentrate on the better times ahead.

God bless you my friend.
