51% of Churchgoers Don’t Know The Great Commission

We talk a great deal about evangelization and catechesis but over half of Christians have never heard of the Great Commission.  As we read in Mathew:

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore,* and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.* And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

According to a newly released poll by the Barna Group, half of churchgoers have don’t know of the great commission.  And, of the half that remains, 25% have heard of the commission but don’t know what it is. Only 17% actually can explain the Great Commission.  If we don’t know what our charge is, then how are we going to bring all nations into discipleship?
